Gavi di Gavi

Gavi di Gavi (aka Cortese di Gavi) is a famous white wine DOCG zone in Piedmont, Italy. The 1,200ha vineyard area surrounds the city of Gavi.

Cortese is the grape behind the wines of Gavi di Gavi, distinguished by its crisp, floral, peachy, aromatic qualities. The wines are best enjoyed young.

Piedmont’s most famous, and finest, white grape Cortese has produced wines here since the 17th century. It only covers 1500ha of the whole region and is mostly found around the city of Alessandria and the Monferrato hills.

Roberto Sarotto’s Cortese fruit and marbly white soils that reflect the bright Ligurian rays back into the canopy and into the bunches. There’s a wonderful lift of fiori banchi/white (elderberry) flowers; plenty of that Ligurian light which seems to have bounced off the Mediterranean and into the heart of the vineyard. And like a baby Chablis it reeks of salty fossils that come to life with a lick! Roberto rightly waits until the spring following the harvest to bottle, enabling the wine to absorb all that goodness and (vineyard) character from the lees that line the bottom of the tank. Crunchy and delicious, it’s perfect with or without food.
